The Rosenthal name is now the most famous in the history of European porcelain manufacture. Originally renowned for its decorative porcelain this company came under the control of the founder’s grandson Phillip Rosenthal and in the late 1930’s. He was an uncompromising doyenne and promoter of the minimalist design culture as espoused by the Bauhaus era.

Rosenthal has attained a reputation for quality and contemporary design by uniting tradition and innovation. Rosenthal has not only placed great emphasis on design over the years but they have also been leaders in the development of technology within the industry thus maintaining their superior quality.

The current Rosenthal range has developed from a co-ordinated concept of the well laid table offering dinnerware and drinkware plus a comprehensive selection of gifts in porcelain and glass. Over the years they have developed collections of products that they have marketed under various names. The latest collections are:

  • Rosenthal ‘Studio Line’

  • Rosenthal ‘Classic’

  • Versace by Rosenthal

Phillip Rosenthal 3rd established ‘Studio Line’ in 1961. This collection presents varied design characteristics without dictating a specific style or setting formal guidelines. This is assured by the controversial characteristics of the many artists and designers from all over the world who contribute to the collection. Rosenthal took the early initiative to stimulate leading artists and designers to express themselves in the designing of porcelain, glass, ceramics and cutlery. Over the years more than 100 designers have emerged. Many of the most famous designers and architects of this era competed to have their work accepted for the prestigious ‘Rosenthal Studio Line’ and to this day acceptance for this brand is considered the epitome of good design.

Names such as Tapio Wiirkala, Timo Sarpaneva, Walter Gropius, Jasper Morrison and James Rizzi are modern additions to the portfolio and their production is never far from capacity due to demand. Each has made their personal mark with their individual, independent contribution to this concept. The common denominator is the uniformly high standard and the awareness that authentic evidence of contemporary culture is being created. In recent times collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld has produced another stunning collection.

Rosenthal’s ‘Classic’ collection dates back to the 19th century when the company began. The founder Phillip Rosenthal 1st named one of the first dinnerware ranges after his wife Maria. Many of the shapes in the existing product range have been in the collection for years. They take their place beside the new creations of classic/modern and traditional/elegant charm. The Classic collection is the interpretation of traditional values into an up-to-date form.

Versace by Rosenthal has its own inimitable and expressive style. The Versace atelier is masterful at uniting the historical and the ultra modern to arrive at truly timeless yet totally contemporary designs. The combination of this extraordinary design concept with the exceptionally high quality that Rosenthal is capable of achieving has made for an amazing collection.
